København

This past week I spent five beautiful days in Copenhagen, Denmark. I went to visit a friend who had been in Utrecht last semester, so I had a really nice tour around all of the different parts of the city, and we even traveled outside of Copenhagen a bit. I arrived on Thursday night, and stayed until Tuesday evening. While the city is on the expensive side, it was well worth it to be able to see such a new and exciting place.

this is a cannon ball stuck in the side of a building in the center of Copenhagen from 1807

 Rosenborg Castle

 Nyhavn

 Copenhagen Opera House

 Queen's Palace

a church near the Queen's Palace

 the Little Mermaid

 Kastellet

some homes near my friend's apartment. Apparently, the Prime Minister lives in one of them

Nyhavn made out of Lego at the Lego store!

 and another church...

 the Supreme Court of Denmark

the old Stock Exchange. Interesting story...At the base of the spire, there are some dragons and their tails are what wind up to create the peak. Well, the architect who designed the building killed himself after the building was constructed because the tails of the dragons were spinning the wrong way.
Sailor's Church where the Royal Family still holds baptisms

the entrance to Christiania...an area in Copenhagen where marijuana is decriminalized
and the exit, stating that 'you are now entering the EU'
Shepard Fairey, who designed the Obama 'Hope' poster, has three walls in the Copenhagen area which he has demonstrated his talent on...
the entrance to the amusement park Tivoli. Sadly, it was closed

 there were 7-elevens everywhere!
really cozy cafe my friend took me to
Hans Christian Andersen, author of The Little Mermaid, The Ugly Duckling, and other fairytales

Elephant House on the back part of the zoo facing the park
 Carlsberg brewing museum
elephants are really special to the Danish people. The elephant is considered to be the highest honor, and the Queen awards important people with symbols of the elephant

Helsingør. This city is a 45 minute train ride north up the coast from Copenhagen
Kronborg Castle, made famous by Hamlet

a model of the castle grounds

the land you see on the other side of the water is Sweden! It's the town of Helsingborg

The trip really was spectacular, and I would love to visit again when the weather gets warmer!
